the FIRST ILLO I EVER HAD IN TIME MAG
i kept visiting, calling, and mailing Ken Smith--AD at TIME---who worked on the NOTEBOOK section there at the mag...one day i sent him a fax (probably a fax) and asked, or begged, "if you ever do a story on mark mcgwire---as a cardinal fan, i would LOVE to work on it!"
he called that afternoon.
