Hi Gary, ur art really influenced me as a 16, 17 year old kid, focused on drawing comics and struggling horriblly with it. In a short span I seen a Jack Davis Steelers beach towel, which blew me away. Then seen ur art a few days later and since then have been set free to do any ideas the way I wanted to do them.
I was caught up in the whole drawing "the marvel way" as that was Marvels big saying back then. Which I loved their art, but it was boring seeing the same type of stuff and frusterating trying to create in a way I wasnt having fun with. Thankfully now Marvel opened up to all styles of art. For those 2 or 3 years tho, I struggled until I seen ur work and realized I wanted to be doing more cartoon type of work over focusing on each anatomy part being correct. Still interested in drawing comics, but not as frusterating anymore. I liked ur sports stuff, do u do much anymore? Sports art/cartooning is y main focus now and hold out hope sports cartoonist will make a comeback someday.
I'm convinced that's the real reason magazines struggled. They just put photos in every article and there was no more imagination, inspiration in looking at magazines. Magazines still surviving use minimal if any art and I would love to see it get back to a time like the golden age of Illustration. Where all content was created by artist that knew how to make imagry interesting and worth seeing.
SPORTS art---- the INTERNET killed the magazines------ no one sits on the toilet with a magazine in hand anymore----- or in a doctors office----- the market has changed and killed off all the advertising too--- they can get a youngster with a photoshop on their iPad and do a $6000 image ( in the old days) and take a photo with their phone- add a filter or 2 in photoshop---and--poof---the buyer thinks it looks great--so PRINT IT---------------- the market for what i did back 20-30 years ago is gone............... like the Woman that Elijah happened upon in the old testament--- the old woman with the dying son--- Elijah holed up with them and God kept them afloat---- Focus on the Family is that house hold that has allowed me to keep drawing for. a living.-------thank you for the kind words---- Jack Davis and me in the same sentence---- that made me smile out loud------------------- i learned so so much from Jack in my formative years---then MORE as i got older----he's the real deal! Odyssey Adventure Club is what i work for 90% of the time---a Focus On The Family thing----longest running audio drama in History!! Good stuff that!
