So glad to see new, shiny work on your blog, man! I still check it every day in this order...Drudge Report, HotAir, Foxnews, CartoonBrew, Gary Locke, the rest is just filler ;)
Hey, could I ask an illustration question if you have a moment?
What do you do when you don't have "direct" reference for something? For instance if you're trying to illustrate a historical figure in a new situation, but the reference is all different lighting, etc?
I'm trying to do a George Washington illustration in a unique pose and I thought I'd ask a pro what they do when their reference is from all different angles and different lighting scenarios.
Do you shoot a piece of reference yourself and try to apply that to the historical person or do you have another grand strategy you could impart to a still-learning illustrator such as myself?
Thanks so much for your time! Hope you had a great Christmas! Keep up the awesomeness.
i have a preset default lighting in my head-----i LIKE a shadow under a nose---it give the depth i want to start off with----then i just wing it on the other light sources----i like a back rim light most of the time---so i just add it. i know i only have about 2 or 3 seconds of attention to tell my story on most encounters, so, i try to say quickly what it is i am trying to convey....only the geeks are gonna check my light sources. i DO try to reconcile in my own head where it is all coming from......but......i do not hamstring myself on that issue.
thanx Brett for the kind words
it's never a waste of time or energy to send kind words!
